Questions from a new boy!!

Welcome!

If you’re used to running P2P's like WinMX you will certainly notice things being a little slower on eMule.

Everyone here has there own tips for using eMule, and here are mine.

1.Set upload BW to a minimum of 11k/bs, or higher if you can manage it while running other P2P's at the same time.
Less than 11 and I notice download speeds running much slower.

2. Many of these films are very rare, and so obviously they lack in sources, thus can take a long time to complete.

3. The more you download the faster your speeds will become as you start sharing more and more partials. The more you share the more frequent your downloads will connect.... That works for me anyhow.

4. When a download completes, try to keep it shared. The more of us that share completed movies, the faster things will be for all of us.

5. Speed shouldn’t be a big issue with these rare films.
By the time people finish complaining about how hard it is to find such films, they could have completed them on eMule, even if it takes a few months for the really rare stuff.

6. From experience I find that files with high sources can complete in a few hours, and others can take weeks or even months, but the waiting is half the fun..... Looking forward to that moment the file turns green :)

7. There are many more little tips that can help you, and you will probably sus them out for yourself as you carry on playing with this great P2P.

I know the other members here will have some good advice to give you.

Good luck!

1 mbps! :o I'd kill for a download speed like that. :)

Anyway here are my tips:

1. Get HighID if you don't have it already. The first few lines in the log will tell you if you have LowID, which denies you access to approx 33% of sources, and results in poor downloading speeds.
2. Very important: your upload speed must not be higher than what your connection can support while downloading at the same time. Typically this is about 80% of your maximum upload speed. This is because you need some upload bandwidth in order to be able to download, so if your upload speed is maxed out, your downloading will suffer.
3. eMule and its variants (in fact any p2p app) automatically split large files into smaller chunks (9.28MB for eMule etc.) and process these parts separately. If you enable it, you can get a preview after you have downloaded about 30 MB or so (after 1MB if you use VLC !!).
4. eMule is NOT fast; not like direct downloading from newsgroups etc. or even torrent. The real power of the ed2k network is it's longevity - files stay alive for years. In newsgroups they can die within hours, in torrent they are alive as long as lots of people are downloading it - once the initial rush is over, they stagnate.
5. Put [FLM] in your nick in your client. That way we will recognize you if we see you, and give you preferential treatment. If you recognize a source, you can PM him either through the client, or through this forum - the people here are very kind; you just have to ask nicely. :)

Iv never bothered looking before, but now I have I see mine is HighID :)

Iv always connected to Razorback2.
I never get chucked off anymore, not since iv noticed Razorback has started showing 6 or 7 servers.

I always choose the RB2 server with the most users connected - average is about 1.12m.

No complaints.

LowID is explained in some detail on the home page of emule, and also at http://www.portforward.com. I'm myself writing a detailed guide on getting rid of it - I'll post the link here when I'm done. :)

Seems there are a few fake Razorback servers floating around. Please everyone keep your IPFilter.dat enabled and updated.

Wow, thanks for the tip emuler!

I kinda guessed the others might be fake, which is why I figured the one with the most users would be real, and by the looks of it I was right :)

IPFilter.dat ? is that anything like peerguardian??

Yes. The one I use can be found here:
http://emulepawcio.sourceforge.net/nieu ... filter.dat
Unless your client has a better way of doing things, I prefer to do the upgrading manually.
http://emuleplus.info/forum/index.php?showtopic=9242
1. Open your old ipfilter.dat with Wordpad and read the version number.
2. Compare with the version on the site as shown by http://emulepawcio.sourceforge.net/nieu ... filter.txt.
3. Download http://emulepawcio.sourceforge.net/nieu ... filter.zip.
4. Unzip downloaded file and rename it to ipfilter.dat.
4a. (optional) Open it with Wordpad and add any custom entries you might have.
5. Replace your ipfilter.dat in your config folder with the new version.
6. Next time the client is started, the new IPfilter will take effect.

Thanks emuler

I like to think I am a little PC knowledgeable, but I also like to keep things simple as I can get confused.
1. Open your old ipfilter.dat with Wordpad and read the version number.
That confused me cos I dont have an old ipfilter.dat that im aware of, do I?

Iv been waiting for the full peergaurdian to be released, wont I be ok with that?

Peerguardian is a fine third-party program. If you use that, there's no need to use ipfilter which is essentially the same functionality built into eMule (and variants).

Sorry about the old ipfilter.dat bit. eMulePlus includes a small (list of really bad guys) ipfilter.dat with the release. eMule does not, but the feature is there, you just have to enable it in options>security.

Ok thanks.

I didnt want to give the impression I didnt like your suggestion, its only that I used PG in the past and would like to retry that as I was kinda familiar with it.

I am glad you mentioned the subject of the fake servers, as this has reminded me that I do need to have some kind of blocker for these IP's.

When a server does drop you, I suppose it is then possible to end up connected to a fake server.

I wonder why servers do drop you then stick you on some other lousy server called sexy.boobs.net or similar automatically.
