The series is an adaptation of the first two novels—The Light Years and Marking Time—from Elizabeth Jane Howard's The Cazalet Chronicles book series, adapted by Douglas Livingstone and directed by Suri Krishnamma. It was produced by Cinema Verity for BBC One, with Joanna Lumley as co-producer.
