Six-year-old becomes first transgender child in Argentina to change identity.

A six-year-old girl, who was born a boy, has become the first transgender child in Argentina to have her new name officially changed on her identity documents.

Luana, known as Lulu, is believed to be the youngest to benefit from the country’s new Gender Identity Law, which was approved in May 2012.

The act enshrines the right to be identified by name and sex as defined by the individual.

As a result, the governor of Buenos Aires, Daniel Scioli, approved Lulu’s application to change her name from Manuel on her DNI, the Argentinian identity card, and birth certificate.

"The government of the province of Buenos Aires has decided to provide a solution to this particular case raised by the family," Alberto Perez, chief of staff, said, according to La Nacion.

The decision was made after Lulu’s mother, Gabriela, wrote to Mr Scioli as well as Argentinian president Cristina Kirchner. She said her daughter identified herself as a girl as soon as she started talking.

"By accepting that my son was not the son I gave birth to, but a girl, I accepted her identity and put myself at her side," said Gabriela, from Greater Buenos Aires.

Lulu, who has a twin brother, was refused the request last December because of her age.

But the Children, Youth and Family Secretary ruled children under 14 were capable of giving consent and cited international human rights in overturning the decision.

Argentinian reports suggested it was the first time anywhere in the world that a transgender child had been able to change their identity through an administrative process without resorting to the courts.

Alfredo Grande, one of the psychologists involved in the case, told Folha de Sao Paulo: “The DNI is like a mirror. If a person doesn’t identify themselves there, it’s not good.

“It was an important fight that we won.”

Cesar Cigliutti, head of Homosexual Community Argentina (CHA), which supported the family, said Lulu’s case was “historic”.

Mr Cigliutti told La Nacion there were “thousands and thousands” of Lulus in their 30s, 40s and 50s, whose parents had not allowed them to live according to their identity.

“They had a terrible life, of self-usurpation,” he said.

At least they didn't remove his willy.

PS. Would have been easier to change his name to Manuela.

You don't understand transgenders....like.... AT ALL, now dont cha?
PS. Would have been easier to change his name to Manuela.
Which would not be as significant for her, of course, which is kinda the point. Kinda. Most importantly for their name choice: It. Is. What. She. Wants.
But sure, that might've been easier for the likes of ... YOU. I guess it's every transgenders deep wish to please those that 'lovingly' mock them. Doing so in the name of god... makes that all the more special.

But...interesting criticism about NAME-CHOICE... from someone who is IDed here by a moniker, and not just any moniker, but ... "OMG"...
That's kind of #IRONIC ...... (or rather: "IrAnic" ?) aka theocratic ironies (unaware)

Must be a very smart 6-year-old to write that application. When I was 6yo, I did not even know what an identity card or birth certificate was

I hope this had nothing to do with parents' wish to get their 5-minute-fame...

Any follow-up? 9 years later?

Why would you think that? Oh.... because being a lower-middle class transgender living in a poor-ish neighborhood, in a machismo country like Argentina is such oodles of sheer, unadulterated FUN.... RIGHT???
Any follow-up? 9 years later?
Wow ..... GIYF!!! :icon_manual

She seems to be doing just fine, 5 years later....cláck overthere!

Exactly.

Changing the name and sex on ID card does not change the fact that he is transgender, right? I gotta wonder if he can use girls' change room and WC in school now and if that would be no problem for his machismo classmates in Argentina. Sorry, too lazy to read the article. Since it was important enough for you to necro-bump this, you could have posted a summary to enlighten us.

I still haven't changed my opinion that a 6 yo child does not really know what he wants. If he wanted to act like a girl or have another name, it would have been no problem for me as a parent to play along.

"Doesn't really know what she wants" ?? Besides this being WHOLLY beside the point, also lucky for you, you're not in charge of her. And I wanna bet if a six year old supports YOUR favorite political goal, like guns (?) or deporting refugees to Rwanda, or getting everyone a basic income.... you WON'T get on your soapbox and declare: "she's six, she doesn't know". This is probably beyond your imagination but suppose everyone, around you would have called you a girl. How would YOU have felt?

"I'm too lazy to read"
In which case, YOU yourself have made your thought on the matter utterly useless. I love it when people do that. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I should reply to this schizophrenic nonsense, but anyway.... Guns, deporting refugees to Rwanda and getting everyone a basic income is NOT my political goal. Besides, FLM is not the place to discuss politics.

Not good, but changing the gender on my ID card would have only made things worse in this situation.

I have a better proposal: let's remove gender from birth certificate and ID card altogether and everybody can simply decide if they want to be a girl or a boy! On the other hand, it would be hard to know if we had actors or actresses here

Hmm that esculated quickly, since I'm here, I agree that life changing decisions should be made when assessed to be mature enough to make them (not necessarily 18, certainly not below 18). And also that the differences between men and women should be considered, we are not the same and you can't lead a girl to be a boy, or a boy to be a girl. It's a complicated topic, anyway, perhaps it's not relevant, but here's a cool video that I like to lighten the mood...

Just think about this: Suppose being gay was the norm and heterosexuality the aberration. Sex between the genders is thought of as immoral, because, like the Ancient Greeks taught us, that's just for mere procreation, not True Love. It will get you jail time if caught, death penalty in case of repeat offense. Now, suppose also, you are as hetero sexual as you are now, you see a lot of women you like, and you know at least 1 in 20 also is interested in you as a male. But it's forbidden! What would you do? Most likely, try to find such woman, hide your love, only have sex in cars at remote hide-outs, in alley ways, in the woods, all the place where nobody would see you. How would you feel if anyone would mock you then with "at least they didn't cut off his willey..."?

This IS TOO the situation for many LBGT people, STILL in many countries, and just 50 years ago in our "enlightened", "civilized" Western world. Turing , father of the modern computer, whose coding work pretty much won the Second World War, one of the biggest heroes of the last century was sentenced of gay behavior, to undergo forced chemical castration. He committed suicide. Took "civilized" England 40-50 years to fully reinstate him.

Oh well.
I agree that life changing decisions should be made when assessed to be mature enough to make them
It's not really the kid who decides, it's whole country, her parents, president Kirchner, who decided to accept her for who she says she IS. I get it, it's fashionable to mock whatever minority there is, when we used to mock those in power. But that's not right.
I guess I expected more broadmindedness from FLM, where there's people whose preferences aren't, let's say ..."widely accepted"...., to use an understatement.

But no.

P.S. Nice vid. Bet if you'd ask this girl, she would FIRMLY fall in the female category. Live and let live, except those that won't do that.
